Introduction: My Journey to Now

Hello and welcome to my online creative space! I’m Karen Hermans, a multi-disciplinary visual artist based in Cape Town, South Africa. My work spans graphic design, painting, brand strategy, and web development. In my studio, artistry and innovation converge, bringing projects to life with a blend of creativity and purpose.

 

A Foundation Built on Creativity

My journey into the world of visual art began in the vibrant environment of my youth, where I was surrounded by creativity and encouraged to play and experiment. This early exposure to the arts, dance, martial arts, music, diverse cultures, and travel ignited a lifelong passion. In 2000, I graduated with five distinctions in visual art and design. This strong foundation set the stage for my artistic endeavours, shaping my identity as an artist.

For many years, graphic design was my primary focus. Working closely with my father at his advertising agency, René Hermans and Associates, which later became Catapult Advertising Studios, I learned the ropes from the ground up. I started as a junior, assisting in the studio, organising, and producing artwork. Over time, I worked my way up to the position of Art Director.

My career expanded further as I collaborated with advertising agencies, media houses, and small businesses, contributing to a myriad of projects. I was fortunate to continue collaborating with my father, leaning on him for mentorship, advice, and guidance. These experiences allowed me to refine my skills in typography, print and digital processes, branding, and most parts of user interface design. Crafting visually striking and impactful designs has been incredibly fulfilling, as I developed an intuitive understanding of visual communication and its power to engage and captivate.

 

A Transformative Shift

Life, however, has a way of reshaping our paths. In 2021, I faced a profound personal loss with the sudden passing of my father. This event shifted many aspects of life, forcing my mother and me to pick up the pieces and prompting a period of introspection and transformation. By 2023, guided by an inner calling, I returned to painting. I enrolled in a professional art mastery program, immersing myself in the rich world of textures, colours, and emotions that only brushstrokes on canvas can convey. This return to painting has been both healing and enriching.

To date, we are still picking up the pieces, but moving forward with him in our hearts. This journey has been deeply personal, a process of unearthing my authentic voice and exploring the depths of my creativity. It’s not merely about perfecting artistic techniques but embracing the profound journey of mastering life itself and striving to become the fullest expression of one’s potential.

 

A Steady Aim

Whether through design or art, my goal remains steadfast: to craft meaningful and impactful experiences through creativity. For me, being an artist is not just a profession; it’s a way of life. It’s about perceiving the world with a unique lens, channeling energy into creativity, and being attuned to the subtleties that make each project special.

With a wealth of expertise and a unique perspective, I approach each project with dedication. Whether the project is a visual artwork for your wall, graphic designs for your business or social media, or a website to showcase your creative journey or products, I am here to collaborate, and bring your visions to life.

 

A New Chapter: Artwork Series and Future Aspirations

I am optimistic about a new, more integrated chapter of my artistic journey, focusing on building on my father's legacy of design and producing new artworks and series. My latest series, including “A Kaleidoscope of Butterflies” and “Wings of Change,” reflects themes of transformation and interconnectedness.

I am pleased to share that an online gallery has expressed interest in representing my Fine Art work, which marks an exciting step forward in my creative journey. Additionally, my Society6 Store features a diverse range of products with my artwork. Revenue from these sales will support several important aspects of my creative journey, including repaying my art mastery program debt, covering essential business expenses, and ensuring the well-being of my rescue kitty. Additionally, these funds will contribute towards my goal of establishing a dedicated studio space, allowing me to further enhance and expand my artistic practice.
